Celebrities for the most part have tremendous pressure on their shoulders to be the best and look the best. They resort to all kinds of fad diets to keep them in check for the world to scrutinize. Low carbs, fat free foods, low calories and a lot of perspiration. Is this the life you deem normal and accepted? Constantly thinking about your next meal, your next workout or your next weigh in? It’s exhausting just to think about it. Most stars will admit this lifestyle isn’t your typical dream life, but it doesn’t seem to deter them one bit, so what can the girl next door do? Follow the next diet trend and hope this time your hard work will pay off? I’ve been on this ride many times and have been unsuccessful. So why have all these diets failed us? Let’s look at some common diet fads.
Carbohydrates are sugars and starches that provide your body and brain with fuel. In order for the body to survive and be in optimum health, you have to feed it carbs. According to the World Health Organization, a whopping 55-75% of your total caloric intake should be in the form of carbohydrates. Diets such as Atkins and the Zone starve your body of these important elements, causing rapid weight loss and nasty side effects such as fatigue, light headedness and hunger pangs. Although fat loss is successful during the first few weeks, how long can you stay on this road before you body crashes and burns? Eventually, you come to a fork in the road that forces you to choose between feeling good or feeling sick. If your too sick to enjoy life, what is the point of being thin?
With low carb diets debunked, let’s look at another fad diet. Eating “good” carbs. These carbs (or so they say) healthy and help you lose weight ” however, these “good” carbs are also calorie-dense. They have a lot more nutritional value than do refined foods, but calories are calories ” you aren’t going to lose weight eating huge portions of whole wheat pasta. You can only burn so many calories in a day, so it really doesn’t matter if you eat just good carbs; you will gain weight if you eat more than you can expend, simple as that. Why can some people eat more than others and not gain weight? There are two reasons ” they eat their carbs evenly throughout the day and of course, metabolic rate is also a factor.
A fat free diet is also a poor choice. Many think that fat free means a leaner me, however, more often then not, these foods are loaded with sugar which is stored into fat. Don’t fall for the line that honey is better than sugar either; they are both calorie rich, regardless of the source. Go for foods which are low in sugar (and low calorie) instead of foods which are fat free.Are diets a waste of time then? They are if you don’t know how your body processes food into energy and how your body uses calories. If you want to learn to eat right and look great, do your research and find something that fits your lifestyle and tastes. If you fall off the wagon, just get right back on it and never give up. You may never get the celebrity body of your dreams, but I’m betting that if you can get to your ideal weight, be more energetic and healthy, you will be thrilled with the new you.
